Love above the Rules

11th January 2017

Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have. Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have. Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for ourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality.

Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal. As the Scriptures say, “Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough.

Part of our journey into Love Above Rules has been how do we take ownership financially and allow our generosity to carry the same call, what does loving God in our church financially look like? Have I become religous in my giving? Do I consider what part God has for me to play in our church story when it comes to money?

We discovered that if every member gave in certain ways it would cause a radical impact on plans and ideas that would reach others and care for those in the church, but what was certain is that God is calling all of us to consider our part in this invitation to radical generosity.

This learning requires us to take steps, for some they will be bold and others simple and small, but every step, into owning and believing God for a financial revolution in our lives and our church.

So how do we do this?

There are two parts to giving in Glo.

  1. Over the weekend of January 28th we will take our annual special offering. Unlike previous years this offering will not be stipulated for a specific purpose prior to it being given, because this is not WHY we are giving in this instance. A gift has no strings, it’s a gift and this offering of thanksgiving, moment of affection and worship is to be a time of Love above the Rules. This is a unique one off gift that breaks the alabaster jars of what we own and lays down before God.
  2. Everyone will have received a new giving slip for regular giving to the outworking of Glo. We want to encourage whoever calls Glo their home to make a fresh commitment to financially own who we are and what we do – to give above the rules on a regular basis. As part of our celebrations we will bring our slips and make a fresh living decision to own our story financially.

How do people give?

People give out of different ideas that the Bible presents to us.

The one part that remains the same throughout the entire Bible is that God loves our generosity and also promises to bless our giving.

Why give now?

It is how we are used to bless and resource our way of reaching and serving others, it ihow we support everything involved in our church and its purpose to others.

The Tithe

This would be the most original form of giving as a Christian – ‘Tithe’ literally means 10%, and the Bible teaches people should bring 10% of what we own/earn as an offering and put it to the service of the kingdom.

Even before it became part of God’s law, it was a response of people in the Bible as worship, as Jacob put it…

Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.” – Genesis 28:20

The Offering

A more common term used in Acts – where offerings were taken to support the poor, pay toward the development of the church and work it was undertaking. Generosity of the people in the church was above and beyond the rule and Jesus encouraged the people to not be held by riches but to use them wisely for the purposes of the gospel. One outward impact of the gospel in a persons life was incredible generosity.

“And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.” – Acts 2

“There is no one way better than another in how to give, what is clear is God asks us to be active in generosity, the tithe principle for me is helpful in having a reference as knowing where to start to give and keeps me in a place of principle when it comes to money and what I own, whatever a person does I would say just make sure its a vibrancy act of love and worship” – Mike Andrea
